"Without Bounds"
Traditional craftsmanship in Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok county,
the Sajó Valley, Trei Scaune (Háromszék) and Burgenland

We launched our series of programs titled "Crafts Without Bounds" in 2005. This eight-year series of programs has been designed to demonstrate the traditional crafts and to introduce the craftsmen of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok county through exhibitions organized around four themes. The program on the first two themes ended in 2008 and in 2009, we started to organize the events (exhibitions, demonstrations, workshops, fairs) of our next program called "Walking the bows".

Our themes:

- Masters of Wheels - the potter's craft (2005-2006)

- Needle, Thread, Scissors - crafts related to clothing (2007-2008)

- "Walking the bows" Braids, knots and loops - the third program in our series of programs which begins this year (2009-2010)

- Cooking and eating (2011-2012)

"Walking the bows" - Braids, knots and loops:

At our events we wish to demonstrate the traditional techniques, materials and the niceties of wicker weaving, rush and straw weaving, fishing net weaving, rope-laying, jewellery and leather goods making, carpet knotting and hair braiding as well as to introduce some of the artisans who keep these crafts alive.

We organize four interactive exhibitions in four towns: Szolnok, Eisenstadt (Kismarton), Rožňava (Rozsnyó), Târgu Secuiesc (Kézdivásárhely). By demonstrating that some tricks and techniques of the traditional professions can be learned with ease, we wish to prove that these ancient crafts are well worth learning and have to be considered as an alternative to other, more "trendy" ones. At our workshops we intended to provide participants with the basic skills of the crafts demonstrated, so that they could get more involved. Those who wish to learn more about the history of the crafts demonstrated, as well as about the noted craftsmen and their works, will find more information in our catalogue, films, CD-s and photographs. Crafts products are going to be available for purchase at the venue.

Our aims:

Besides supporting traditional craftsmanship, the project aims to advance the establishment of professional connections, as well as strengthening existing ones between NGOs and between NGOs and civilians. It also aims to join the forces of those who work for promoting and preserving traditional crafts. In addition to this, by offering an opportunity to try them, we wish to create a net of connections between those who are interested in traditional craftsmanship.
