These people arrived in the Cape some three hundred years ago from the Dutch East Indies originally as slaves. The Malay family in the story is intent on finding a husband for their daughter, Farieda. However, being a modern woman, Farieda wishes to break away from traditional arranged marriages.

The background of the story is the annual Minstrel Carnival, a festivity going back more than one hundred years and which takes place on the second of January, commonly called The Second New Year. The second story is a bitter-sweet account of the modern scourge of AIDS. A benevolent employer teaches her gardener, a Northern Sotho man called Pule, how to drive a car. He eventually leaves his employer to find a better-paid job. Pule graduates from driving cars to heavy-duty vehicles which is where the big money is to be made.

However, long-distance drivers are known to pick up “wives” who keep them company on their long trips. The danger of infection is very real. Pule is one of these. His employer who first taught him to drive wonders whether she was responsible for causing his death, an unforeseen consequence of her act of kindness.
